We awoke to a beautiful day today, so after quick runs to Costco and Trader Joe's, we decided to take Max off on a grand adventure, also known as manual labor, or the fun that is U-pick fruit farming!We headed down to Pescadero, and after the requisite stop at the San Gregorio General Store (for a little live music listening and a bag of potato chips) we arrived at Swanton Berry Farm where blackberries (thornless) and strawberries are there for the pickin'
After a quick explanation to Max that he was only to pick the red ones, we headed into the strawberry fields, where he promptly ate about his weight in little nuggets of gorgeous berries.
When we'd gotten our fill of the "red berries" we headed down the hill to the blackberries. I've never seen such organized blackberry brambles! I grew up picking wild blackberries at St. Dorothy's, so these thornless, glorified grape vine looking plants were fascinating to me, and they shared their bounty with us (for just $2.50 a lb!)
The hardest part at this point was explaining to Max to NOT eat the red ones, and look for the black ones instead!
After a couple of hours in the sun, collecting berries, we headed back to the picnic area for a snack, and then came home.
A fabulous day, and something I can totally see us doing a couple of times a season. We're already planning to go back in November, for KIWI PICKING! I can't wait!
